About

Dar al-Shifaa

Founded in 2008 by Dr. Abdallah Rothman, Dar al-Shifaa began as a private psychotherapeutic counseling practice in Northern Virginia and Washington DC, USA.

Over years of clinical work and scholarly research into Islamic psychology, a distinctive therapeutic approach that heals the heart, mind, and soul inspired by the Islamic tradition was developed by Dr. Rothman. Although his expertise does not extend to physical medicine, his practice is rooted in traditional wisdom that sees health as a holistic integration of physical, spiritual, and mental well-being. His methods transcend conventional “talk therapy,” incorporating heart-centered somatic healing and wellness coaching.

Dar al-Shifaa has evolved into a collective of multidisciplinary practitioners. Each member, trained in Dr. Rothman’s therapeutic approach, brings a wealth of their own knowledge from various healing professions, unified by a shared paradigmatic framework inspired by Islamic principles of holistic care.

Our Vision

We envision a world where ancient wisdom traditions informed by Islam are available and accessible to all as a path of healing and transformation.

From the wisdoms of diet and physical disciplines to social engagement, refinement of character and spiritual purification of the heart, there is a vast resource for wellbeing that is an endless ocean. Dar al-Shifaa aims to be a part of the revival of the Islamic tradition of community based institutions of holistic health where God is at the center. We are working toward a physical Dar al-Shifaa that is a community of healing and learning. Our intention is to offer a place where individuals, families, youth, elderly and communities can come together and learn to heal ourselves, each other and the world. Where the living tradition of Islamic healing and wellbeing is lived and experienced.

Our Approach

Somatic Healing: Touching the Heart of Transformation

We recognize that verbal communication is important for connection and comfort, but our primary focus is on the metaphysical heart, situated in the chest. By guiding clients to attune to their bodies and emotions, we delve into the physical manifestation of their experiences, enabling us to address the core issues that hinder their alignment with their true nature (fiṭrah) and aspirations for their higher self.

At Dar al-Shifaa, we believe in facilitating the divine process of healing by helping individuals become receptive to it. Our practice is not confined to a rigid protocol but is steered by core Islamic principles:

We view each person as an integrated whole—nafs (soul), ‘aql (mind), qalb (heart), rūḥ (spirit), and jism (body). The heart, central to our being, is reached through a full-bodied presence rather than abstract thought alone.

Optimal health is achieved when one’s life is in harmony with their innate disposition (fiṭrah) and the natural order. Connection to nature and its cycles is thus crucial for maintaining balance.

We see life’s difficulties not as punitive but as opportunities for personal growth, guiding individuals toward a state of wholeness through acceptance and surrender.

Encouraging internal change, we support our clients in their emotional, psychological, and spiritual development, aiding them in realizing their full potential.
